Offshore Wind: Creating More Jobs than Offshore Drilling?

A recently published report from the international organization Oceana, titled Offshore Energy by the Numbers: An Economic Analysis of Offshore Drilling and Wind Energy in the Atlantic, has found that the oil and gas industry has greatly over exaggerated their claims that offshore drilling would stimulate job creation. As an alternative to offshore drilling, the report suggests that offshore wind would have far greater benefits than offshore drilling, inlcuding stimulating job creation.

Some of the key findings of the report are highlighted below:

  • Offshore wind on the East Coast has the potential to power 155 million households
  • Offshore wind could create 91,000 more jobs than offshore drilling
  • In 13 years of operation, offshore wind could generate more energy than could be provided by all of the economically recoverable offshore oil and gas resources
  • Offshore wind creates about twice the energy and jobs as offshore drilling
  • Offshore wind offers more environmental benefits
